In July 2021, I excitedly opened my Ancestry DNA results to learn more about my Mexican-American heritage. Instead, I uncovered the shock of a lifetime – the man I'd called "Dad" for 35 years was not my biological father.
My results also challenged what I'd always believed about my racial identity. I grew up believing I was a multi-ethnic Mexican woman, but after decades of not quite fitting in, I discovered my biological father is African American.
Little did I know, I was far from alone. I'd unknowingly joined a community of people who were trying to navigate complicated questions around identity, family, and belonging.
I started DNA Surprises shortly after my discovery because I desperately wanted to connect with people who understood this experience.
What started as a space for NPEs has grown to include donor-conceived people, late-discovery adoptees, and others who have unearthed long-hidden family secrets.
DNA surprises are complex - there's grief, anger, confusion, compassion, and joy, too. Every conversation is unique, and there’s room for all of it, whether someone is in the thick of the immediate aftermath or has been living with their discovery for years.
My hope is to provide a space where people find comfort in stories from those on similar journeys. I also want to raise awareness about DNA surprises and encourage honesty, transparency, and compassion around parentage.
